What We Do
Firefighters have a broad range of responsibilities and duties. Firefighters are responsible for responding quickly to fire-related emergencies as well as many others across Maui county, which consists of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kaho’olawe and the waters between them.
Key Responsibilities of a Firefighter
- Emergency response: Responding to fires, explosions, and other emergencies, often requiring rapid decision-making and action.
- Fire suppression: Utilizing various equipment and techniques to extinguish fires and prevent the spread of flames. This may include setting up hoses, using fire extinguishers, or operating fire engines.
- Rescue operations: Assisting in rescue missions to save people and animals from dangerous situations, including burning structures, car accidents, or natural disasters.
- Medical assistance: Providing emergency medical care or first aid to injured individuals until paramedics arrive, including CPR and basic trauma care.
- Fire prevention: Conducting inspections and safety assessments to identify fire hazards, educating the community on fire safety practices, and promoting fire prevention programs.
Schedule
Maui Fire Department (MFD) and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) firefighters work 24-hour shifts over three shifts (A, B, C watches). Firefighters work an average of ten days each month.
Pay & Benefits
As a firefighter trainee, you will be paid throughout the whole recruit class (6-12 months) as a full-time employee. Compensation includes medical, dental, vision insurance.
